Switzerland: St.Gallen

The charm of this city is based on more than its picturesque peaks and urbane flair. The Convent of St. Gall has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 1983. In addition to the convent, some of the more prominent features of the city's historic district include the convent's library, which is the oldest library in Switzerland, and the 15th century Church of St. Laurence whose spire offers a magnificent view of the city that is well worth the effort it takes to climb the stairs. No fewer than 111 houses are adorned with artfully carved oriels.
Indeed, the golden age of embroidery at the end of the 19th century helped to inspire a special enthusiasm for decorative and artistic architecture. Palatial factories, mansions and museums were built in art deco style.
The «Mussel» by Santiago Calatrava, a building designed by Herzog & de Meuron on St. Gallen's Mount Rosenberg and Heinz Tesar's work are excellent examples of a seamless and successful transition to modern architecture.
One of the most beautiful art deco houses in St. Gallen became the home of the Forster Willi Company that was founded under the dynamic direction of Conrad Forster Willi.
St. Gallen is also the site of the company's current headquarters, the very place where world-class «fashion and more» is conceived of and created with the help of the most modern of techniques, the most productive of machines and most competent experts.
